A 1 percent tax on food and beverages commercially prepared and sold in Decatur County had its first reading before the Decatur County Council Tuesday.
Economic Development Director Bryan Robbins, speaking on behalf of Parks and Rec. and the READI team, explained the O1 ordinance at length and answered questions from the council before a vote was taken.
The proposed Food and Beverage Tax applies to any food or beverage furnished, prepared or served commercially in Decatur County.
According to Robbins, the levy can never exceed 1 percent, and as proposed all resulting funds may only be spent on the renovation of the Allen Memorial Pool and the Decatur County Fairgrounds. The proposed levy would expire July 1, 2045, unless legally acted upon prior to that.
